Farrelly Brothers line up new Stooges

ODD cast for a movie about odd characters. I guess it makes perfect sense. Of course I’m talking about the the biggest news out of Hollywood yesterday, that being Sean Penn signed to star in The Farrelly Brothers’ Three Stooges, and Jim Carrey and Benicio De Toro set to join him.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Penn will be playing Larry Fine, with Carrey and Del Toro in negotiations to take on the parts of Curley and Moe Howard respectively.

The movie has been in development for some time with many an acting name thrown up to fill the legendary roles. The likes of Jack Black and Ben Stiller, two previous Farrelly collaborators, had been mentioned.

But, who would’ve thought two Academy Award winners and a nominee would eventually become the slapstick comedy kings?

Carrey is probably no great surprise - though will need to add about 40 pounds -- especially when considering he’s also worked with the Brothers on Dumb and Dumber and Me Myself and Irene, but Penn and Del Toro -- well, they are.

It will certainly be interesting to se how it all unfolds.

THR says, “Peter and Bobby Farrelly wrote the script, which Bobby has referenced as “Dumb, Dumber & Dumbest.

The website goes on to say, “The film is not a biopic but a fictional treatment that maintains the Stooges’ gleeful slap schtick updated for a modern milieu.

“Originally constructed as four separate shorts, the feature screenplay has since been streamlined into a single narrative.”

“Included in the story line is an opening that shows the Stooges as kids in an orphanage, a device that will require some “Benjamin Button”-style visual trickery to place the adult actors’ heads on child actors’ bodies.”

The film is not a biopic but a fictional treatment that maintains the Stooges’ gleeful slap schtick updated for a modern milieu.

The studio is looking to start production in the next couple of months before a 2010 release.

Check out the old boys in action …
