The Secret World of Arrietty: Studio Ghibli takes on classic “The Borrowers”

When I was a little girl, I loved Mary Norton’s The Borrowers, a series of fantasy novels for young people. Published in 1952, the first novel called The Borrowers, was followed by The Borrowers Afield (first published in 1955), The Borrowers Afloat (first published in 1959), The Borrowers Aloft (first published in 1961), and The Borrowers Avenged (first published in 1982).  The stories involve a group of little… VERY little people who live directly under the feet of humans.  They make their livelihoods by collecting (borrowing) little trinkets and scraps that wasteful humans consider worthless.

In 2010, Japan’s Studio Ghibli released The Borrower Arrietty to Japanese audiences.   It was met with critical and commercial success, and was the highest grossing Japanese film at the Japanese box office for the year.  On February 17, 2012, the film will be released to North American audiences under the name The Secret World of Arrietty by Walt Disney Studios.

The American version of the film stars a voice cast including Amy Poehler, Will Arnett and Carol Burnett.  I cannot wait to see this one when it makes its way to the States.  Check out the trailer below.  And if you can’t wait until Feb. you can order a copy of the Japanese version here: Studio Ghibli: The Borrower Arrietty DVD (Japanese Version with Eng Sub)
