Well, my reaction to a friend after just watching this was, “I am not sure if this is one of the best movie trailers ever, or one of the worst things ever done to something from the 1980s.” He and I both agreed we like the Scottish Smurf, and that the human casting is great. It includes Neil Patrick Harris (How I Met Your Mother, Doogie Howser M.D., much more), Jayma Mays (Glee), and Hank Azaria (MAd About You, Friends, Huff, so much more) as Gargamel should be hilarious.
I just went to IMDB.com to see the rest of the voices for the film and must say, Wow. Jonathan Winters as Papa Smurf should be perfect. Add in Katy Perry as Smurfette, George Lopez as Grouchy Smurf, Paul “Pee Wee Herman” Reubens as Jokey Smurf, Keenan Thompson (SNL) as Greedy Smurf, B.J. Novak (The Office) as Baker Smurf, Jeff Foxworthy (Everything Redneck and Blue Collar) as Handy Smurf, Wolfgang Puck as Chef Smurf, and Fred Armisen (SNL) as Brainy Smurf and you have a very well rounded voice cast.
I am upset that Chris Kataan also formerly of SNL, whose father Kip King provided a voice for an original Smurf (Tailor Smurf) was not part of the cast. I think it would have also been great to work Russell Brand in alongside his wife Katy Perry, but oh well.
All in all it looks to be a pretty good movie that brings back an iconic piece of 80s pop culture.
