Jason Segel from How I Met Your Mother and movies like Knocked Up, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, and I Love You Man has co-written the screenplay for and is also starring in, “The Muppets”. The next movie in a long line of loved films starring Jim Henson’s greatest creations is set to hit theaters on December 25th, 2011.
The story will center around Gary (Jason Segel), his girlfriend Mary (Amy Adams), and a new Muppet named Walter. In the new storyline The Muppets we have all come to know and love since films like the original The Muppet Movie in 1979, and their weekly TV show are now retired entertainers. They are lured out of retirement by Gary and Walter to help save the TV studio where the show was filmed from the evil Tex Richman (Chris Cooper) who is set to take over the land the studio is on so he can drill for oil on the location. If The Muppets can put on a show that pulls in 10 million viewers they can save the studio.

Some other big names have been rumored to be signed up for cameo appearances similar to Steve Martin’s role as a waiter for Kermit and Piggy in the 1979 original. Those actors include: Zach Galifianakis as a Hobo, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Mickey Rooney, Alan Arkin, and Billy Crystal. Also featured in the film will be Ricky Gervais, Rashida Jones, and Charles Grodin returning for another role in a Muppet movie. Grodin had previously starred in The Great Muppet Caper in 1981, and also in a TV Movie, The Muppets at Walt Disney World in 1990.
While it can never live up to the standard set by the original in 1979 with the people involved in this new installment I am sure it will be a good movie worth seeing.
Here are two great clips from the original, including te Steve Martin cameo, and two of the best movie songs ever!
