Well, the #1 movie of the Summer premieres this week. The first reason is that only two movies premiering this week are being shown in more than a handful of theaters. One of them will be shown in over 4000 theaters. Even if it weren’t it’d be #1 though.
Toy Story 3 will open in 4,028 theaters today. I think it will easily be the biggest opening weekend so far this year. The only movie that might come close will be the new Twilight movie which will premiere on a Wednesday, which I think is cheating. In the end Twilight is probably the only one that will compete with TS3′s overall box office too. Woody and the gang will be sitting along side Shrek when it is all said and done. It will be interesting to see which will win the Oscar though.
Disney has added in a few new toys to the mix, and dropped the gang off in a day care now that Andy is all grown up and on his way to college. Should be fun to see the new stories that will arise in the new setting.
The other movie opening widely this week is Jonah Hex starring Josh Brolin, John Malkovich, and Megan Fox. This looks like a weird movie from the commercials, but Josh Brolin can probably make it worth watching. It will probably have a respectable box office total, but be a far off 3rd place for the week behind TS3, and The Karate Kid. It SHOULD beat out The A-Team’s second week though.
Also opening this week are two movies that I think will build up a following over time. I am not saying they will make a ton of money, but critically they could do very well. The first one is opening in just 8 theaters. I am not sure why it isn’t getting any attention at all. The movie is Cyrus and stars John C. Riley, Jonah Hill, and Marissa Tomei. To me it just seems that it should do well with that cast. (Note: Right after I finished up this post I hear the rerun of Late Night with Jimmy Fallon say, “From the new movie Cyrus, John C. Riley.”)
Then opening in just one theater is The Killer Inside Me based on the novel by Jim Thompson. It was made into a movie long ago, and has been close to being made quite a few times since. It was actually filmed partially right here in Tulsa. The story follows a West Texas Deputy Sheriff who is also a serial killer. the film stars Casey Affleck as the serial killer, Kate Hudson, Jessica Alba, Ned Beatty, and Simon Baker as the lawyer trying to uncover Affleck’s character Lou Ford as a serial killer. Obviously with opening on 1 screen it won’t make any money at all, but from what I hear it could be worth watching.

Why the gods allow this sort of thing to continue is a mystery.
