Howard the Duck (1986) Review

Howard the Duck Review – A Movie Quacktacular!

Ridiculously unbelievable? Yes, of course. Entertaining though! Many people have ridiculed me for actually liking this movie for years. To them I say, Quack Off!

It is an entertaining and at times funny movie. It is about a duck from another planet where evolution started with an egg and wound up with highly intelligent ducks. Sort of a parallel planet with ducks replacing people. He is sitting down to relax and unwind watching some television when suddenly he sucked up right out of his living room and transported millions of miles away to a strange place called Earth…more specifically to a place called Cleve Land. He meets a sweet young girl named Beverly who befriends him and gives him a place to stay. He later saves Bev and her band mates from an unscrupulous manager. A Scientist friend who tries to help figure out how to get Howard home figures out how he got here. While attempting to send Howard back to his planet they unleash one of the Dark Overlords of the Universe who takes over one scientists body. The Dark Overload then sets his plan to bring more Dark Overlords to earth into motion. In the end Howard saves the band, Beverly, and the world.

Lea Thompson is great in her role as Beverly, an aspiring rock star who helps Howard get his webbed feet wet in this new strange world. Jeffrey Jones can fit perfectly into just about any role you can give him. Whether it is Principal Edward Rooney, or a scientist taken over by a Dark Overlord.

Sure it is a hard to believe story, but many movies are. If E.T. can come here, why can’t a duck from a planet filled with intelligent ducks?

Not a lot of people realize it, but in between producing Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and fantasy movies like Willow and Labyrinth, the great George Lucas produced this lesser-liked movie. Still it gets no respect in most circles. Give it a chance, you will laugh at least a few times.
