Looking forward to visiting Shutter Island

Just like he did with Robert De Niro for many years, Martin Scorsese is building up quite a powerful partnership with Leonardo Di Caprio.

The director teamed with De Niro for Mean Streets (1973), Taxi Driver (1976), Raging Bull (1980), Goodfellas (1990), Cape Fear (1991) and Casino (1995) among others.

In more recent times, Di Caprio has been somewhat of a muse for the born and bred New Yorker, starring in Gangs of New York (2002), The Aviator (2004) and The Departed (2006), which resulted in Scorsese finally being honoured with a long overdue Academy Award.

It must be something about De’s or Di’s which attracts Scorsese … or simply both actors’ brilliance in front of the camera.

Di Caprio and Scorsese have recently reunited for the upcoming Shutter Island, which will be released in October.

And judging by the trailer that has just been unveiled it’s quite a departure for both director and actor, but one that looks to have the goods.

Long and the short of it … Leonardo Di Caprio, Michelle Williams and Martin Scorsese during filming.

It’s a supernatural thriller, set in the 1950s, about a rising US marshall who goes to investigate the disappearance of a criminally-insane patient from Boston’s Shutter Island Ashecliffe Hospital, but quickly finds himself in the thick of a sinister plot concocted by the unethical doctors. Things take a real turn for the creepy.

As an added bonus, Di Caprio is heading up a massive cast that also includes Mark Ruffalo, Ben Kingsley, Emily Mortimor, Michelle Williams, Elias Koteas, Patricia Clarkson, Ted Levine, Jackie Earle Haley and Max von Sydow (yeah, he’s still going).

The film has been adapted from a 2003 novel by Dennis Lehane, the man behind Mystic River, and has been in development for some time. Several directors and actors have been attached to the project in the last few years, including David Fincher and Brad Pitt.
