Surrogates gives life to futuristic thriller

surrogates movie Surrogates gives life to futuristic thriller

The Surrogates is the latest feature film about to be released that has been adapted from the pages of a comic. And allows its star, Bruce Willis, to wear hair again

Having recently seen the first trailer for this sci-fi/thriller that will burst onto screens in late September, I have to say both look great.

Though changing the year in which the action is set – from 2054 to 2017 – the film follows the interesting path laid out by the comic. People are now using surrogates (humanoid remotely-operated vehicles) to go about their day-to-day lives, including interacting with each other, much like The Matrix.

However, an unknown force is determined to drag the human race out of its virtual lives by going around and destroying those of their proxies.

A bald cop called Greer (played by Willis) investigates the crimes through his own robot double which has a nice head of hair. But after a near fatal encounter, when his surrogate is killed, Greer is forced to bring his human form out of isolation and unravel a conspiracy behind the crimes.

Radha Mitchell plays Peters, Greer’s partner, Ving Rhames as The Prophet, a cult figure who apparently disdains surrogates and plans an uprising.

It’s certainly got a genuine Blade Runner/Matrix/Equilibrium feel to it. And if it’s anything like those movies it should be one to watch.

Director Jonathan Mostow has an interesting, without being totally successful track record though, which starts with Beverley Hills Bodysnatchers (1989), and is followed by the just so-so trio of Breakdown (1997), with Kurt Russell, U-571 (2000) with Harrison Ford, and Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (2003) with Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Now he’s worked with Bruce Willis – and his regular co-star, his rug.

I love the premise but it just looks like another Bruce Willis action blockbuster bore fest. What a shame, it could have really interesting if done well.

Is it based off a comic or a graphic novel? I’d love to see that.

That rug looked like it was ready to crawl off on its own!

It was actually a five-issue comic series to begin with Cheryl. Probably made into a graphic novel after that. (Sorry for the slack reply)

The film certainly looks like one that could go either way. I’ll probably have a look on DVD.

Surrogates movie is most thriller movie for me as it has included soul awaking scenes. It was awesome to watch vicious circle around one detective. It made me to bite my nails. Omg, when I remember that movie my hair stood up. It was the most horrific movie that I have ever watched.
