A Monsters v Aliens bout may have already proven a big hit, but a group of ‘sapient rag dolls’ look set to knock the stuffing out of their big screen animated rivals in 2009.
They are the stars of what looks to be a pretty bloody awesome movie called ’9′, being produced by Tim Burton (Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands etc) and Timur Bekmambetov (Night Watch, Wanted).
Due out on September 9 (09/09/09), ’9′ is a full-length adaptation of Shane Acker’s much-heralded 2006 Academy Award-nominated short film of the same name.
Burton was quoted at the time as saying the short was “among the most extraordinary 10 minutes of film we’ve ever seen”, calling the style “hauntingly beautiful”.
Also directed by rising star Acker, the full-length ’9′ has Elijah Wood, John C. Reilly, Jennifer Connelly, Martin Landau, Christopher Plummer and Crispin Glover all lending their voices to the main characters.
Buzznewsroom.com, which has some great images from this unique-looking movie, describes ’9′ as a “new era in animated storytelling …
“… When 9 (the main rag doll, voiced by Wood) first comes to life, he finds himself in a post-apocalyptic world. All humans are gone, and it is only by chance that he discovers a small community of others like him taking refuge from fearsome machines that roam the earth intent on their extinction.
“Despite being the neophyte of the group, 9 convinces the others that hiding will do them no good. They must take the offensive if they are to survive, and they must discover why the machines want to destroy them in the first place. As they’ll soon come to learn, the very future of civilization may depend on them.”
I’m looking forward to seeing how it all pans out.

G’day
Pretty hard to see which market they’re targeting.
A little too dark perhaps for younger patrons – perhaps a little too twee in the characterisation for teens.
Looks the goods though . . . will be interesting to see what the critics have to say.
Cheers
Well i’m 17 and that movie looks incredible
